Check the “References and materials” page from the above menu bar frequently for newly uploaded goodies to support your current and future studies of Spanish. There, you will find the complete text portion of “Platiquemos” Level One; the first book in a series of eight adapted from the FSI Spanish Basic Course by Don Casteel, from which we have taken the oral exercises for this class.

This class intends to provide you with a strategy for self study beyond class and as much key material as possible so that you can continue to study on your own.
The core ideas presented are intended to form a good foundation for your continuing study and to get us all to a similar starting point on day one.
You will use three core resources in this class.
Reading selections come from the Defense Language Institute (DLI) Spanish “Cumulative Grammar Notes.”
Written homework comes from the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) “Spanish Programmatic Course” Workbooks.
Oral exercises come from an adaptation of the FSI “Spanish Basic Course,” called “Platiquemos,” created by Don Casteel.
Please print out the study guide-class syllabus to keep you on track. This is a very non-traditional method of instruction that requires study and practice at home.
Download the core verb list, and any other documents you see below. Documents linked here under “Study Guide” will be used in class.

Below are the links to “DLI Cumulative Grammar Notes” “FSI Workbook” and “FSI Workbook 2” for reference.
Reading and written assignments are listed by day in the Class Prep section below, along with links to each of the oral exercises.
Written work is given by exercise number in the column on the left of the online workbook documents. You can click on the lesson number and print that lesson. You can check your work using the answer key at the end of the workbook. We will not necessarily review all of these written assignments in class, but if you’ve printed them, take them to class with you anyway.
Reading assignments are given by page number (found at the bottom of the online pages in the “DLI Cumulative Grammar Notes”) rather than by lesson number.

Below are five tables that represent each day of class. Each day is divided into two three-hour parts.
The Platiquemos links open up your oral assignments by unit. Where it says “Read” it refers to the DLI Cumulative Grammar Notes and where it says “Workbook” it refers to the FSI Workbook(s), all of which are linked above.
Practice each Platiquemos unit out loud 3 times, including all basic sentences, drills, narratives and dialogues.
The audio corresponding to each oral unit can be found on the “Optional Platiquemos audio” page in the drop down menu on this page.
Please print each of the oral units and take them to class for in-class participation.
